چکیده

Myotome portion of the somites give rise to most of the skeletal muscles of the body. Muscles of the extremities develop from somatic mesoderm. Splanchnic mesoderm gives rise to cardiac muscle and most of the smooth muscles; whereas mesoderm of the pharyngeal arches gives rise to some of the head and neck muscles. The sternalis muscle is a derivative of superficial part of the rectus abdominis muscle [1]. Sternalis is a flat, ribbonshaped muscle that begins from the lower part of the ribs, rectus sheath and then courses upward, finally inserting into the upper part of the sternum and ribs or the sternocleidomastoid muscle [2]. Various authors have classified sternalis muscle under 4 main categories regarding the structure it has been derived: (a) from pectoralis major, (b) from rectus abdominis, (c) from sternomastoid and (d) from the panniculus carnosus [3]. It is necessary to record and discuss unusual anatomical variants with the use of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools as these variants could present a challenge to the radiologist or surgeon in establishing a diagnosis [4].

Sternalis Muscle: An Unexpected Finding during Mastectomy

Sternalis muscle also called rectus sternalis, rectus thoracis, or episternalis is an anomalous muscle of the anterior chest wall with unknown anatomical function. It is regularly observed in lower animal but infrequently in humans. Presence of this muscle can create confusion with tumours of the anterior chest wall during routine mammography. Although less is known about its origin and innerva...

A unique presentation: rectus sternalis

Rectus Sternalis is a rare fl at slip of muscle present parasternally in the thoracic wall. During the regular dissection of pectoral region, three slips of Sternalis muscle were observed bilaterally in an adult male cadaver. On the right side there was a single slip (RS1) while on the left side two slips (RS2 and RS3) were present. All three slips were present anterior to the Pectoralis Major ...

Case report: bilateral sternalis muscles with a bilateral pectoralis major anomaly.

The importance of continuing to record and discuss anatomical anomalies was addressed recently by Hicks & Newell (1997) in the light of technical advances and interventional methods of diagnosis and treatment. Two recent radiological reports (Bradley et al. 1996 ; Murphy & Nokes, 1996) highlighted the diagnostic dilemma posed by a sternalis muscle in the detection of breast cancer. The sternali...

Incidental finding of the sternalis muscle on chest multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT): the diagnostic value of additional postprocessed MDCT images for an uncommon muscular variant.

We herein report two cases of incidental finding of the sternalis muscle in the right anterior chest wall on multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT). We emphasize the diagnostic utility and value of additional postprocessed MDCT images, which can be easily created using volume data sets of MDCT, in establishing an accurate diagnosis of the sternalis muscle, an uncommon muscular variant.

Unilateral presentation of three muscle variants in the pectoral region

A rare case of three muscle anomalies in the pectoral region was discovered during routine dissection of an 85-year-old female cadaver. The muscle anomalies include the congenital partial absence of the pectoralis major muscle, a sternalis muscle, and a pectoralis quartus muscle. All three variants presented on the right side. The pectoralis major muscle demonstrated a normal clavicular head bu...
